STEP 4: OBTAINING THE RE-ENTRY
PERMIT
Difference
between “Extension of Stay” and “Re-entry Permit”
| “Visa” |
is issued outside of the Kingdom
of Thailand by Thai Embassy or Thai Consulate in which you request
entry into the Kingdom of Thailand. Once they allowed to entering
the Kingdom of Thailand, the Immigration Officer at the airport
will stamp a date in your passport. This is referred to as your
“Extension of Stay.”
|
“Extension of Stay” |
is the period of time, which allowed you to
remain in the Kingdom of Thailand. This is typically the date stamp
in your passport by the Immigration Officer either after entering
in the Kingdom of Thailand through a border checkpoint or issuance
by the Immigration Police after a request for an Extension of Stay.
|
Most foreigners misunderstand about the difference
between an Extension of Stay and Re-Entry permit much to their own
disadvantage. Here is the key point; the “Extension of Stay” stamp
is the controlling date. Everything is depended on this date. Your
Re-Entry permit or work permit is only valid until the date stamped
in your passport to leave the country.
Any Re-Entry permit you obtain will expire the
same date as your “Extension of Stay” expires. If you depart the
country without a Re-Entry permit, your “Extension of Stay” will
be automatically invalidated as well as your work permit. This is
the key distinction so after going through the process of getting
a longer period of time for your “Extension of Stay” and work permit.
|
|
Therefore, please ensure that you already have at least
a single Re-Entry permit before departing Thailand, and you have to come
back to Thailand during the period of Extension of Stay as well. Our legal
team can advise and assist you about how to obtain a single Re-Entry entry
permit (one time use) or Multiple Re-Entry permit (unlimited use), and
make you confident before the next traveling.
How
to get a Re-Entry permit
Foreigners have to appear in person at the Immigration
Bureau located at 507 Soi Suan Plu, Sathorn, Bangkok 10120, recommend
to go early morning otherwise will be in a long line. The Re-Entry window
is on the ground floor on the left side.
To facilitate the travel schedules of foreigners, aside
from the Immigration offices throughout Thailand, a Re-Entry permit may
be obtained at the Bangkok Airport, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hat Yai, and Sukhothai
International Airports, as well as other designated immigration checkpoints
throughout the country. Bangkok International Airport operates 24 hours
(7 days a week), while other checkpoints operate from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
(Monday to Friday).
You
have to prepare the following document:
 |
One to two photos of 5 × 6.5 cm. (2”× 2.5”), full faced,
bared-headed, black and white or color photographs taken within six
(6) months. |
 |
Fill out the Re-Entry permit application |
 |
Re-Entry Fee: Single entry is 1,000 Baht, and Multiple entry is
3,800 Baht. |
Process:
| 1. |
It will take one (1) business day for re-entry permit
issuance. You can pick up your passport the next day, but if you really
have an urgent flight to travel abroad, bring your Flight/Airplane
with you and try to ask the officer for a favor (you can wait to receive
it at that time, or in the afternoon). |
| 2. |
Do not forget to bring a Receipt of re-entry permit with you, otherwise
you cannot get your passport back. If this is inconvenient, you can
send someone else to pick it up. All that is required to pick up your
passport with the re-entry permit is a Receipt. |
Please keep in mind that the Re-Entry permit will be expired the same
date as your visa expires, or as getting visa extension stamp in your
passport. If you already get a long term visa stamp and always travel
abroad, it is advisable to request a multiple visa if you expects to be
frequently traveling out of Thailand. This allows you more than one entry
into Thailand during your travels
